"I know I don't have to." I could hear her twisting the phone cord. "That's why I'm doing it."
On Saturday every cabin on Mill Creek had a light in it.
The Tulsa grandmother and her grandson had cabin one, because she said she'd earned the closest one to the kitchen.
The Butte sisters had cabin two and a crutch leaning on the porch.

My mother had been in the kitchen since five in the morning.

At six all forty of us sat down at the long table in the big room.

My mother stood up before anyone touched a fork.
She had her reading glasses on their chain, and her knee brace, and a folded index card in her hand.
