Chapter 19: The Plan
Nobody slept after that.
By one in the morning the four of us were at Abram's kitchen island in whatever clothes we'd found.
I was in Abram's gray T-shirt. Breck was in his jeans and nothing else. Rand had his shirt on inside out.
"Friday," Breck said. "He knows we're getting the certificates back on the twenty-ninth. He's beating the judge."
"And he's got the relay," I said.
They all looked at me.
"The meter man told me." I wrapped my hands around the mug. "Duane has him on standby Friday, in case the phone thing fails."
Rand set his cup down very slowly.
"How do they vote?" I asked. "Hands?"
"The petition asks for a secret paper ballot," Rand said. "Counted at the front table by the membership committee."
"Who chairs that?"
"The gray mask," Breck said. "Beer gut."
I could see it. Every piece of it, laid out on the slate.
"So everybody drops their ballot in the box," I said. "The committee starts counting. Duane pushes a button on his phone."
"And the whole building goes dark," Abram said.
