Chapter 23: Renner Electric
I sat on the closed lid of the toilet and looked at it for a long time.
Then I wrapped it in a paper towel and put it in my back pocket, next to my copper card.
When I came out, all three of them were at the bar, waiting.
"You okay, Sparky?" Breck said. "You've been gone ten minutes."
"Come upstairs," I said. "All of you."
Rand looked at Abram. Abram was already putting his napkin down.
The Third Floor was closed on a Friday that wasn't the first one.
The brass cage creaked up past the card room, and the gate rattled open on the dark hall.
Nobody was there. Just the black walnut bar under its low gold lights, the brass plate by the door, and the smell of old leather.
I walked to the bar.
I took the test out of my pocket, unwrapped it, and laid it on the walnut between the three of them, lines up.
Nobody spoke.
Rand leaned over it. He read it twice. Of course he did.
Breck put both hands over his mouth.
Abram didn't look at the test at all.
