Chapter 25: Home Visit

The woman on the porch said my daughter's name before she said her own.

"Hazel Renner?" She read it off the front of a folder.

"I'm with the Department of Child Safety. We received a report about the child at this address."

It was 7:40 on a Friday morning.

I had a job in Gilbert at eight, spit-up on my shoulder, and Hazel on my hip with one fist wound into my braid.

Hazel was four months old.

She had dark hair that stuck up in the back and a loud opinion about mornings.

The woman was in her forties, in a gray cardigan, with a county lanyard.

She had the tired face of someone who had been lied to before breakfast.

"What does the report say?" I asked.

"I can't tell you who made it. I can tell you what it says."

She opened the folder.

"That an infant lives with several unrelated adults connected to a private sex club."

"That the father is unknown. That the child isn't safe."

In the kitchen behind me, a spoon stopped against a bowl.

I knew what would happen next if I waited.

Abram would come down the hall in his calm voice, put a hand on my back, and say, "Let me."

"You can refuse to let me in," the woman said. "Then I come back with a deputy."

"Come in," I said. "I'd rather you see it than read it."
