Codi's POV
Dorothea had put the place cards in little silver holders.
The dining room in Prescott had a table for fourteen.
It had white linen, tall candles, and a chandelier over the middle.
We'd said yes to the dinner in the kitchen on Thursday, all four of us, out loud.
Rule seven, in action.
Abram wanted to see what his mother wanted, and I wanted to watch her want it.
Hazel slept in a portable bassinet by my chair, with the monitor clipped to the rim.
I wore my good jeans and a white shirt Rand had ironed without being asked.
Then I read the cards.
Dorothea sat at the head of the table.
Abram's card was at her right hand, and mine was beside his.
Breck's card was at the far end, beside a retired colonel who was deaf in one ear.
Rand's was next to Breck's, between a woman who grew hydrangeas and the swinging door to the kitchen.
I looked at Breck.
Breck looked at the colonel, and then at me, and mouthed, Sparky, it's fine.
It wasn't fine.
I sat down anyway.
There were nine other guests.
Her bridge club, a retired judge, two widows from her church, and a man from the historical society.
