We left Prescott at a quarter past six, with Hazel buckled in the back and no breakfast.
Dorothea stood at her kitchen window in a robe and watched us load the truck.
Abram had told her we were heading home early.
It was true, and it was all he said.
She lifted one hand, and I lifted mine, and I hated that I did it.
Breck stayed in the truck with Hazel outside the jail in Phoenix.
Abram and Rand wouldn't have been allowed in, so they stayed too.
Rand pressed a small notebook into my hand.
"Write nothing down in there," he said. "Remember it. Write it down in the car."
"I can't add a dinner bill."
"You can remember everything anyone ever said to you," he said. "It's very annoying."
A guard walked me down a long, cold hall that smelled of bleach and old coffee.
The visiting room was a narrow booth with a scratched plastic window and a telephone on a steel cord.
On the other side of the window sat Duane Pendergast.
