Chapter 14: Privacy
"It isn't stolen," I said. "It's his. He gave it to me in writing."
"Writing can be lost."
"So can a pager log," Tim said. "Funny how that works."
Bennett finally looked at him.
Then he straightened his cuffs and went back into the ballroom, where the quartet had started up again, too loud.
The letter came on Tuesday.
It was from the hospital's lawyers, on heavy paper, delivered by a courier who made me sign for it.
It said I had "disclosed protected health information at a private social event."
It said the hospital "reserved all remedies."
It said any further showing of the recording would be reported to the Board as "evidence of unprofessional conduct."
I read it standing up in my kitchen.
Then I took a picture of it and sent it to Ronnie's lawyer.
She called back in four minutes.
"Kelly's husband owns that recording," she said. "Kelly's husband gets to decide who sees it. Not the hospital that had it scrubbed off the internet."
"So what do I do?"
"Nothing. You don't do anything. He does."
Ronnie had been home in Dundalk for two weeks.
