Chapter 20: Sentencing
Ronnie put down his fork.
"You don't have to," he said. "I cut you. You don't owe me a word."
"I know I don't."
"Then why?"
I looked at June asleep under his hand.
"Because the last time somebody told a room what happened to me, it was a lie," I said. "This time I want to tell it."
The lawyer tapped her pen against her pad.
"I'll send you the date and the courtroom," she said. "Wear something boring."
The Baltimore County Circuit Court was in Towson, in an old stone building with a dome.
Courtroom 4 had wooden benches, and a ceiling fan that didn't move the air.
August 4 was ninety-six degrees.
I wore my boring navy suit.
I'd been back on Six for three weeks. I'd worked the night before and come straight from the hospital with a toothbrush in my bag.
The night nurse had come with me straight off the same shift, still in scrubs under her cardigan.
Tim sat on my other side, in his gray suit, holding my hand on the bench where nobody could see.
