Chapter 11: Donor 4471

Ward's mother decided in an instant.

"A figure of speech, dear," she said, and her smile came back. "The family we have all built for her. The nursery, the house, the name. Don't be so literal."

"That's not what you meant."

"It is precisely what I meant. You're exhausted, and you hear things."

"I hear things for a living," I said.

She gave me a long, cool look.

Then she turned to Haley and said, in a voice that was nearly kind, "Come along. We'll get you a ride."

Haley did not move for a moment.

She looked at me with her whole face open and frightened, and then she followed Ward's mother out of my front hall.

The door shut.

Hattie hissed through her teeth.

"Well, that was fun. I want to hit her with a lamp."

"Take the boxes," I said. "We're leaving."

We loaded Stella's crib mattress, her swaddles and my field kit into the truck in twenty minutes.

I did not look back at the house, because I knew what I would feel if I did.

That night, the dog barked at one in the morning.

I was awake in Hattie's spare room with Stella asleep on my chest, listening to the sleeping house.

Hattie's feet hit the floor in the hall.

"Lexi," she called quietly. "There's somebody on the porch."

I carried Stella down the stairs one step at a time.

Through the glass in the green door I could see the shape of a woman sitting on the top step with her knees drawn up, and a duffel bag beside her.

It was Haley.

She had no coat, and it was thirty-eight degrees out.

I opened the door a few inches.
