Chapter 13: The Note on the Building

Emmett's POV

Ward Wexler's mother walked into my office at seven-thirty on Friday morning, before the front desk had finished the coffee.

She wore a camel coat and pearls, and she carried one thin leather folder.

My front desk clerk stood up behind her counter.

Two of my night nurses, just off shift, stopped in the doorway of the break room with their bags on their shoulders.

"Mr. Ridgely," Ward's mother said. "A word, in private."

"Anything you say to me you can say here, ma'am."

She looked at the nurses and the clerk.

"As you like."

She opened the folder and laid a single page on the counter.

"Your landlord sold the note on this building on Wednesday. My family trust holds it now. It was a small purchase."

I did not touch the page.

I had read the top line already, upside down, and my stomach had gone cold.

"You were three months behind in the summer," she said. "The note is callable."

"I caught up in July."

"With a cashier's check from my son."

She said it pleasantly, to the room.

My clerk made a small sound.

One of the nurses looked at me, and then at the floor.

I had not told either of them where that money came from.

"Here is what I propose," Ward's mother said. "I forgive the note. Wexler Marine sends every family in its employ to you for night care, forty households, for as long as you like."

"And."

"And you sign a short statement. That Alexis was agitated in your office, that she refused help, that you were concerned for the child. You withdraw from her affairs."
