Chapter 6: She's Mine

The cashier's check was folded in my coat pocket, a photocopy Emmett had left me.

I did not take it out, and I did not say one word about it to Ward in the car.

I wanted his mother to hand me the first lie herself.

Ward's mother has hosted Sunday lunch at one o'clock in her Eastport house every week for thirty-four years.

Nobody has ever been excused.

I walked in on Ward's arm with my stitches pulling at every step, and Haley came in behind us carrying Stella in the car seat.

"There's my girl," Ward's mother called from the head of the table.

She meant Stella.

She was sixty-two, with a silver bob, pearls and a voice built for committee meetings.

She kissed the baby first, then the air near my cheek.

"Alexis. You look dreadful."

"Thank you," I said. "It's good to see you too."

There were twelve people at the table.

Yacht club friends, two of Ward's cousins, a board member from the children's hospital, and the family's doctor, who sat at the foot with his napkin already tucked in.

Ward's mother had put Haley in the chair next to hers.

"Haley, dear, sit here. You've been on your feet all week."

Haley sat, and the baby went into her arms without a murmur.

I took the chair across from them.

The first course was a cold cucumber soup.

"The gala is three weeks from Saturday," Ward's mother told the table. "Harbor Children's, the whole board, and I have never had a better list. After the gala, I intend to sleep for a week."
