His bedroom was on the third floor of the brownstone, under a sloped ceiling, with a bed the size of a small boat.
It was one o'clock in the morning.
I sat cross-legged in the middle of the bed in one of his white shirts, with my knees pulled up under the hem.
He stood at the window with a glass of water, looking at the street.
"You said rule five," I said. "You tell me the truth when I ask."
"I did."
"Then I'm asking you something small first."
He turned.
"Why the rules?"
He set the glass on the sill.
For a moment I thought he wouldn't answer.
"My wife left on a Tuesday," he said.
"Preston's mother."
"Yes. I was twenty-nine, with a company, a house, and a son who was nine."
"I thought I was doing everything right."
"I came home on a Tuesday night to a note on the kitchen table."
"Benedict."
"The note said she had asked me for years to be present."
"She was right. I had never heard her once."
He came and sat on the edge of the bed.
