Chapter 22: Kendall's Door
Benedict opened my car door, and the rain came in sideways under the umbrella.
Kendall stood up when she saw us.
Her cream dress was soaked through, and mascara had run down both cheeks, and she held something small and flat against her chest.
On the opposite sidewalk, a couple walking a spaniel stopped under a streetlight.
A window on the second floor of the next house slid up.
"Hallie," Kendall said. "Please. I waited at the hotel until the clerk threw me out. I came here because I didn't know where else."
"How did you find the house?"
"Preston's old address book."
"What do you want?"
"Let me in. Just for tonight. I have nowhere. My parents won't answer, and my apartment is on Preston's lease, and he changed the locks."
I didn't say anything.
Benedict stood very still beside me with the umbrella over my head and the rain falling on his shoulders.
"I need you to know I'm sorry," Kendall said.
"I know it doesn't mean anything."
"But I've thought about it all week, and the only person who's ever been kind to me for no reason was you."
A cold, quiet anger settled in my chest.
"You want a place at the family table," I said.
Her face flinched.
"I want to go home."
"You want Gran to let you back in. You want to sit at the lake house on Sundays and be forgiven."
"I want to fix it."
"You came here at midnight, in front of the neighbors, because you thought I would be kind in front of them."
