Chapter 8: The Wrong Woman's House

Rhys's POV

Priscilla found me in the corridor of Evergreen Hollow with my hand still on the doorframe of Room 9.

I had gotten out of the room and shut the door before she turned the corner. I don't remember deciding to.

"There you are," she said. "I woke up and your side of the bed was cold."

"I couldn't sleep."

"So you drove to a sanatorium on your wedding night?"

"I wanted to see where they'd put her."

It was almost the truth. It was enough for the nurse standing behind her, who studied her shoes.

Priscilla smiled up at me. She looked small in her coat, with her hair loose and her cheeks pink from the cold.

She slid her arm through mine.

"She's safe here, Rhys. She's being looked after. Come home."

Her eyes went to the pocket of my jacket, just once.

Then back to my face.

I let her take me down the stairs.

My wolf fought me the whole way to the car.

At the Hall she went up to bed, and said she would wait.

I said I needed a drink and a minute.

I stood in the Alpha's study with the lights off and Nora's scan in my hand.

Four lights.

I had known what a lie looked like for most of my life. My father taught me to read them across a table, in a voice, in a handshake.

I had been looking at the wrong face for a week.

I took the scan out of my pocket, laid it flat on the desk and sat down.

I didn't think about the Luna's band or the elders or what the pack would say.

I thought: she stood in front of the elders and told me, and I asked her why now.

I did that.

I sat there and let it land.

The first refusal I said with my teeth clenched, on a May morning, because the elders wanted a Luna with a wolf and my father had left me a wife I hadn't chosen.
