Chapter 12: The New Washing Machine
The new washing machine arrived right at ten, on a small truck with two men in green uniforms.
They lowered it down the ramp with a strap, carried it through the yard between the chickens, and installed it in the same corner of the laundry room where the old one had stood.
It was white and shiny, a top-loader with a wide, deep drum.
Hipólito signed the receipt in his usual handwriting, with the P that curled to the left.
The men from the truck left.
We were alone in the laundry room, looking at the new machine.
It smelled like freshly opened plastic.
"It's bigger than the other one," I remarked.
"They said it washes twenty kilos."
"And what do you need twenty kilos for?"
"The sheets."
I laughed.
Hipólito pulled something from the pocket of his apron.
He held it in the palm of his hand for a moment, lowering his eyes with a shyness that made him look away.
It was a small, wide ring made of light-colored wood, polished until it gleamed.
