Chapter 5: The Call
At exactly eight, I propped my phone against the fruit bowl on the kitchen table.
I sat down in a chair, wearing a tank top and a loose cotton skirt.
Hipólito sat in the chair beside me, out of the camera’s view, his hands on his knees.
We had a plan.
I would do the talking.
He would listen without making a sound.
And the phone would record everything.
The screen lit up.
Wilmer appeared in a messy room, lit by a yellow lamp, with a sheet hanging in the background.
No cap, his hair wet, a tight white T-shirt.
“Hi, gorgeous.”
“Hi, Wilmer.”
“You look beautiful.”
“Thank you.”
“Listen.” He shifted to the edge of the bed. “I have something important to tell you. Cleofás called me today.”
My heart gave a lurch.
“Cleofás?”
“The money guy. Don’t freak out.” He waved a hand. “I need you to tell my dad to sign some papers. To transfer the house into my name. That way I can sort out the mortgage.”
“What mortgage?”
“Something I signed on his behalf a while back. Just paperwork.”
“You signed for your dad?”
