Chapter 8: The Night
At midnight, the house was dark.
From my room, I heard Wilmer snoring across the hall, dry and steady.
He was sleeping in the guest room, six steps from Hipólito’s door.
I got up in my nightgown, barefoot, without turning on the light.
I stepped carefully across the wooden floor, following the line of boards that didn’t creak.
I’d memorized the map over two years of sleepless nights.
I opened Hipólito’s door without making a sound.
The room smelled of cedar and clean man.
He was sitting on the edge of the bed, fully dressed, his hands between his knees.
He was waiting for me.
I closed the door very carefully.
I turned the lock, and the click sounded to me like a cannon blast.
“Come here,” he whispered.
I went.
I stopped in front of him, and he wrapped his arms around my waist, burying his face in my stomach.
I felt his warm breath through the fabric.
“Be quiet,” I said. “If we talk, he’ll wake up.”
“And if I touch you, will you be quiet?”
