Chapter 18: Grandfather
I went to my grandfather's study at seven on Thursday morning, before the cook had lit the stove.
Amos was already in his chair, with the lamp on and his cane across the desk.
He looked as though he hadn't slept, and he didn't pretend otherwise.
"Sit," he said.
"No."
"Then say it standing."
"You killed her father."
"Yes."
He said it without a pause and without lowering his eyes.
I had come in with a speech, and the one word took it out of my mouth.
"The grand jury sat that Monday," Amos said.
"He was going to testify with the true books, and I would have died in a federal prison.
"I gave the order Thursday night. The man I paid is dead now. The car went off the road Friday."
"He had a sixteen-year-old daughter."
"I knew that when I wrote it."
