Chapter 11: The Graze

I carried her to my truck with the ledger jammed under my arm.

She came around halfway through the drive, her head on my shoulder, and swore at me with great skill.

"Put me down."

"I'm driving."

"Then stop driving."

"You've been shot."

"Grazed." She looked at her arm and went pale. "Possibly shot."

"Hold still."

I took the on-ramp too fast and ran the light on the Warwick side.

I called the number she told me, and a voice answered on the first ring.

Fifteen minutes later I was in the basement of a brick house in Johnston, the home of a quiet gray man who had been the Bardi family doctor for thirty years.

He cut her sleeve away and washed the wound with a bottle of something that made her hiss.

"It's a furrow," he said. "A quarter inch deeper and it would've been bone. I'll close it with eleven stitches."

"Make it ten," Rosalia said.

"Eleven."

I stood against the wall with my hands in my pockets and watched the needle go in and out.

She didn't look at it.

She looked at me the whole time.

When the doctor wrapped her arm, he said, "Rest. No lifting for a week. If you get a fever, call me."

"I'll call you if I die."

"Please call me before that."

I drove her home.

I carried her up the stairs over the garage again, because she said she could walk and wobbled on the second step.

The apartment was dim.

I set her on the bed, and she pulled me down with her good hand.

"Don't go," said Rosalia.

"I wasn't going."

"I want you to stay tonight."

"I'll stay as long as you want."

I kissed the corner of her mouth.

Her skin was clammy, her pulse fast under my thumb.

"They shot at you," I said. "They could have killed you. Because of a test."
