Chapter 13: The Warning
"Get in the truck," I said.
"Remo, I only need five minutes."
"Not in her yard. Not under her window."
Shelby looked up at the lit window over the garage, and something went across her face that I didn't care to name.
She got in.
I pulled out onto Federal Hill with the wipers beating and the heater blowing cold.
She sat with her wet coat pulled around her and her bruised wrist held in her other hand.
"Talk," I said.
"Corrado has a waiter."
"A waiter."
"He's on the catering staff for Tullio's birthday dinner. Corrado pays him. At the toast he puts something in the Don's glass."
"What?"
"I don't know. Dean said it would look like his heart."
Her teeth were chattering, and I turned the heater up without meaning to.
"Then Dean wants it to be you," she said.
"He's going to leave an envelope of Corrado's cash in your coat."
"Forty thousand dollars. And I'm supposed to say I saw you take it from the waiter."
"You."
"He told me I'd go to prison if I didn't." Her voice cracked. "He said my name is on everything already."
