Chapter 16: Nine Men

The Thursday before Tullio's birthday, my nine men were waiting for me at the bar on Atwells Avenue.

They had scattered after the padlock, to four yards from Fall River to Westerly, and they still drove in for a drink when I asked.

The bar owner had pushed three tables together under the pressed-tin ceiling.

He had put a bottle of the good grappa in the middle and refused to take a dollar for it.

"There he is," my oldest mechanic said. "The Don's boy."

"I'm nobody's boy."

"You're wearing a suit."

"It's a loan."

"It's a nice loan."

The youngest one, the one with the new baby, held out a phone with a blurry photograph of a red face in a blue hat.

"Eleven weeks," he said. "She hasn't slept since September."

"She has your ears."

"God help her."

They laughed, all nine of them.

I took the stool at the end of the table and felt my shoulders drop for the first time in a month.

The foreclosure had taken the Edgewood house on the thirteenth, and I had carried two bags up the stairs over a garage on Federal Hill.

I had not said it aloud to anyone.

"We didn't come to talk about the suit," the oldest said, and put something heavy on the table.
