Chapter 19: The Two Chairs
Nobody in that house made a sound.
Corrado's smile went stiff.
Tullio looked at me for a long moment.
Then he started to laugh, a dry cough of a laugh that bent him over the table.
"There," he said, when he could breathe. "That is the answer I wanted, and I did not know it."
"Papa," Rosalia said.
"Sit down, Rosa. Hear me, all of you."
He eased himself back into the chair.
"This family has two chairs. I sat in both because I buried my sons."
The room leaned toward him.
"The first is the Don's. He holds the ring and the family's business, and every man answers to him."
He nodded at me.
"The second is the Godfather's. He keeps the oath, and he enforces it when a man breaks it."
"He answers to the Don."
"Two chairs," the priest-collar murmured.
"Rosalia has the ring," Tullio said. "Remo has the oath. Neither moves without the other."
He put out his thin hand, and I laid the gold signet in his palm.
He took Rosalia's right hand and slid the ring onto her thumb.
It was too big for any other finger.
