Chapter 19: The Ward
The card did not say what time, so I went to work an hour early and told everyone.
"He's coming here?" Ivy said, in the supply room, with her arms folded over her pink streak. "To the ward?"
"At some point today."
"In front of sick children?"
"He thinks it will make me look cruel if I say no."
"Oh, honey." Ivy picked up a stack of juice cups and set them down hard. "This is a pediatric floor. We have a code for him."
"We don't."
"We do now. It's called Ivy."
At two in the afternoon, the day room was full.
Eight kids in pajamas and robes sat on the floor with a puzzle.
Three parents slept in vinyl chairs.
The charge nurse stood at the desk with a clipboard, and two aides stood near the doors, doing nothing in a very focused way.
The elevator dinged.
Colin walked out in a gray suit with a bandage at his temple and a bouquet of white roses the size of a bush.
