Chapter 5: A Clean Cut

At eight the next morning, someone knocked on my door and said Miss Bianca wanted to see me in the glass conservatory.

I put on my trench coat over a black shirt and went down alone.

The conservatory was a long room of white iron and glass, full of orange trees in pots, with a stone floor and no servants.

Bianca stood at the far end in a pale blue suit, holding a silver letter-opener shaped like a dagger.

"You came," she said, and smiled. "I wasn't sure you would."

"You asked nicely."

"I want to talk like two women." She put the dagger down on a table of pruning tools. "Rocco married you last night, but I have loved him my whole life. I only ask you to share a little of him with me."

"Share."

"You will have his name and his money. I only need to be near him. The Ferrante wives have always understood that."

"I'm not sharing my husband," I said.

Her face went flat and smooth.

"Then you leave me no choice."

I took a step back.

She picked up the dagger by the blade, turned it in her hand and dragged it across her own forearm.

Blood welled up bright red through the pale blue silk.

I stared.

Then she raised her other hand and slapped herself across the cheek so hard her head turned.

She did it again, with the back of her hand.

A red mark spread under her eye.

"Help!" Bianca screamed.

It was a high, tearing scream, and it filled the glass room.
