Chapter 9: Fire
"Who is it?" Rocco asked.
"The Brooklyn site." I was already on my feet. "The vault door is open and the alarm is going."
He stood up so fast the chair hit the wall.
We ran to the garage together.
He drove, and I told him everything on the way.
"Bianca and Nico Greco were in a hotel booth this afternoon. Nico said the boss says Friday. He said my showroom would make a nice bonfire."
Rocco's knuckles went white on the wheel.
"You heard it."
"I recorded thirty seconds of it."
"Why didn't you tell me when you heard it?"
"I swept the site myself instead."
"Term two," he said quietly.
"Term two."
"You told me no Ferrante man inside The Fortress."
"I did."
"And a man got in anyway."
I had no answer.
He took out his phone with one hand and gave an order, short and quiet and cold.
"My men will be there in four minutes," he said. "They'll be outside the gate."
"Outside."
"Outside," he said. "As you asked."
We reached the site in nineteen minutes.
The building stood in the dark with its lights on, a white block of glass at the end of an empty road.
My site manager stood at the gate, sweating.
"I tried to go in, Mrs. Ferrante. The vault has a timer running. I think it's a device."
"How long?"
"Four minutes on the display. Three and a half now."
I looked at the building.
The server vault held two months of my work, every camera feed from every night of construction, and the access logs that would show who had gone in and out.
