Chapter 13: The Smile
I read the text, then handed the phone across the pillow.
Cesare read it once.
He did not say a word.
He got up, pulled on his trousers, and went to the window.
"He has dated it," I said. "Wednesday. He wants me to know there's still time to behave."
"He wants you to drug my coffee on Wednesday morning." He did not turn around. "And clear the house of children by night."
"So he plans to come here."
"With the ledger and the black phone as his excuse, yes."
I got out of bed and stood beside him.
The garden below was black, with the pale ghost of a stone bench.
The phone buzzed again in my hand.
Lunch tomorrow, my father had written. One o'clock, the club. Come alone, and bring your answer.
"I'm going," I said.
"No."
"He thinks I'm his. If I don't show, he stops waiting for Wednesday and does it sooner."
Cesare turned.
His face in the dark was the face of a man doing arithmetic with something he could not afford to lose.
