Chapter 14: Torn Page
The house was dark when we got home, and Hester's door was shut.
I walked into Jonas's study without being asked, and I turned on the lamp over the drafting table.
I heard him come in behind me and close the door.
I took the pink county form out of the clear folder and laid it on his blueprints.
"Tuesday, 9:12 in the morning," I said.
"You told me on the steps that a clerk filled in the blank."
"I did."
"That was a lie."
"Yes," Jonas said.
He did not explain it away, and he did not step closer.
"I read your name in the obituary," he said. "I thought you would come for the funeral."
"I thought you would not come to me if I asked, so I filed first."
"You waited at the elevator for an hour and a half."
"I did."
"You let me sign."
"I wanted," he said, and stopped.
He opened the bottom drawer of the desk and took out a thin stack of stapled pages.
At the top it said, "Petition for Annulment of Marriage."
He picked up a pen and signed on the line at the bottom, once, fast.
