Chapter 16: The Vote
The boardroom on the ninth floor has a table that seats twelve and a chair at the end that nobody sits in.
It was my chair for four years, the little one by the credenza where the minute-taker sits.
On Thursday at ten, Vivian pointed at it.
"Ms. Marrin will take the minutes," she said. "The chair appoints, and the chair has appointed."
Colin's father was already seated at the right hand of her place.
He was wearing the signet ring and a smile.
"The secretary is a suspect in an active investigation," he said. "She is also the wife of the officer we are here to discuss."
"The recording secretary is out sick," Vivian said. "Ms. Marrin types a hundred and ten words a minute. Do you?"
A director at the far end coughed to hide a laugh.
I sat down and opened my laptop.
There were seven chairs filled that morning.
Vivian sat at the head.
Colin's father sat on her right, and five other directors sat along the sides, in their gray and navy suits.
Glenn sat alone at the foot of the table, because the CEO does not vote on his own removal.
