Chapter 11: The Anniversary Gala

Wesley's POV

The Vanstone Lakeside anniversary gala filled the whole ballroom on the fortieth floor.

Four hundred guests, a string quartet, an ice sculpture of a lighthouse.

An envelope had come to our apartment that morning, thick cream paper, my name written by hand.

Maia held hers on the elevator ride up.

"We don't have to go in," she said.

"I think a rich man sent us tickets for a reason."

"Then let's find out the reason."

She slid her arm through mine.

She wore a dark green dress with a low back, and I had already spent most of the cab ride deciding not to look at it.

Finn had been invited too.

He was at the bar in a black tux, a drink in each hand, and he waved us over with the grin that made everything look fine.

"You came!" he said. "Good. Stay close to your wife and keep your back to the wall."

It was the kind of advice a friend gives.

I took the drink.

A man in a bow tie asked me if I was the coordinator who left in April, and he shook my hand.

I scanned the room for Delaney and couldn't find her.

Then I found Dalton.

He stood under a chandelier with three men in expensive suits, telling a story with both hands.

He saw us and his face lit.

"There she is," he said, loud enough to carry. "The physical therapist! I owe you an apology for the flowers. Didn't realize you'd be so touchy."

The men around him laughed.

Maia's fingers tightened on my arm.

"Mr. Rhodes."

"And Wes! The man of the hour." He swept a hand toward me. "Gentlemen, this is the groom who got dumped at his own wedding and found a nurse to fill the vacancy."
