Chapter 15: Finn's Envelope

Finn lived over a bike shop on Milwaukee Avenue.

I took the stairs two at a time and didn't knock.

He was at the kitchen table in a gray T-shirt, eating cereal out of a mixing bowl.

He looked up, saw my face, and put the spoon down very carefully.

"Okay," he said. "Who told you?"

"Nobody told me. I remembered." I shut the door behind me. "You were in the room. You held the pen."

He closed his eyes.

"Yeah."

"Six months. You sat by my bed for nine days, and you told me a bride ran off with her first love, and you never said I picked it."

"You made me swear."

"I made you swear."

"On my mother." His voice cracked. "Wes, you were so calm. That was the worst part. You wrote a whole page, you folded it into thirds, and then you asked me to put on my jacket because we'd be late."

I couldn't sit down.

"Why the steakhouse?"

"Because you told me to say it. You said if anybody asked about the night before, it was a bachelor dinner."

"What did we do the night before?"

He rubbed his beard with both hands.

"You drove to her father's house to ask for his blessing, and you gave him a copy of the prenup you'd already signed. Waived everything. The hotels, the money, all of it. He said you were a decent man. I waited in the car with the engine running."

"And?"

"And at midnight a black sedan pulled out of the Vanstone gate, and Dalton Rhodes was driving it." He looked at me. "You saw him. I saw you see him. You got in the car and said, 'It's probably nothing.' You said it three times between there and my place."
