Chapter 19: The Auction
Wesley's POV
Maia took my hand under the table and didn't let go for forty minutes.
We sat in the third row of the Vanstone Lakeside ballroom, at a round table of strangers, with a silent auction catalogue between us.
Four hundred guests wore black.
The ice lighthouse from the gala had been replaced by a bigger one.
"You haven't told me the plan," I said under my breath.
"I told you to sit still."
"That's not a plan."
"It is for you." She turned her head, and her green eyes caught the chandelier. "I don't need you to do anything, Wes. I just need you where I can see you."
Her thumb moved once across my knuckles.
It was a very small thing.
I felt it in my spine.
Since the clinic, she hadn't said a word about what I'd done, or what I'd said, and I knew she was still carrying it.
But she'd put on the green dress again.
She'd chosen the seat nearest to mine.
Finn stood against the back wall with his arms folded, a glass of water in one hand.
He nodded at me once.
Delaney sat at the family table in a plain black dress with her hair pinned up, next to her father.
She wasn't looking at anyone.
At nine o'clock the auctioneer thanked everyone for their generosity.
At nine-ten, a man in a tailored charcoal suit rose from a table near the stage, and my whole body went tight.
Dalton walked up the steps with the poise of a prince.
Mr. Vanstone watched him go without blinking.
"Ladies and gentlemen," Dalton said, taking the microphone off the stand. "If I might."
