Chapter 8: After Dark
Maia worked late on Thursdays.
At eight-thirty I was alone in the apartment, washing the dinner dishes, when someone knocked.
I thought it was Finn.
It was Delaney.
She stood on the landing in a long coat with her hair wet from the rain.
She'd been drinking.
Not much.
Just enough to take the edge off her voice.
"How did you find where I live?" I asked.
"Your marriage license is public record. It lists the address." She tried a smile. "I'm sorry. I know I shouldn't be here."
"You shouldn't."
"Five minutes."
"Maia isn't home."
"I know," she said. "That's why I came."
I should have shut the door.
I opened it wider instead, because she looked so small, and because part of me wanted to know what she would say.
She came in and stopped by the kitchen.
The drying rack stood on the counter with two mugs upside down on it.
She stared at them.
"You still do that," she said.
"Do what?"
"Two cups. Every morning." Her voice went soft. "One black with three sugars. You never drank it. You'd leave it on the counter until it went cold and then pour it out."
My hand tightened on the dish towel.
"I didn't tell you that."
"No."
"Nobody told me that."
"It was mine," Delaney said. "You made it for me every morning for three years, and I never once said thank you."
My chest felt hollow.
She walked up close, close enough that I smelled rain and wine and a perfume I didn't know.
"Wes," she whispered. "Please. Just try."
