Chapter 7: Things to Leave Margot

On Thursday morning the doctor discharged her with a bag of new pills and an appointment card for the transplant clinic.

"She can't stay in a bed waiting," he told me in the hall. "If her numbers hold, she goes home, takes these, rests, comes in twice a week. If they don't, she comes straight back."

"Home," I said.

"Wherever she's staying. Somewhere calm."

Margot sat on the edge of the bed with her coat on, looking at the wall.

"I'm not going back to that house," she said.

"Brody's friends are still there," I said.

"I know. I saw the video."

"Then where?"

She looked at me for a long moment.

"Where are you sleeping?" she asked.

Millie, who had been leaning in the doorway, said, "Absolutely not," and then, a second later, "Fine. The sofa. But I'm checking your pulse twice a day and you eat what I put in front of you."

"Thank you," Margot said, and I could tell it cost her something.

My sister drove.

Margot rode in the back seat with her head on the window and did not say anything the whole way.

At the flat Millie put her on the sofa with a blanket and a glass of water, and went to work with a look that told me I was responsible for everything.

I went out to the garage.

It was the only place in Millie's building that still had my smell in it.

Two years ago I had moved my tools there after I sold the shop, and I had never carried them to the house.

The bench still had a half-finished drawer on it.

I picked up a plane and ran it down the edge, and the curl of pale pine came off in one long ribbon.

My hands remembered.

I had not made anything for myself in three years.

I heard the side door open.

"I thought you were resting," I said, without turning.

"I was bored."

Margot stood on the concrete in socks and Millie's sweatshirt.
