Chapter 10: What He Said in the Yard
I walked with Clarence to the first pine at the edge of the yard.
I stopped there, where the others could still see me.
His mother stood by the Volvo with her arms crossed.
The deputy's truck was already backing out through the snow.
"Say it," I said.
Clarence took his time.
He brushed a flake of snow off his sleeve.
"You gave me your password in March," he said. "For your cloud account."
"For the wedding photos."
"For everything. Do you remember?"
"Yes."
"It syncs everything. Photos. Notes. Voice memos."
The cold got into my chest.
"Two weeks ago," Clarence said, "at seventeen minutes past three in the morning, a voice memo came through to the tablet in my kitchen."
He paused.
"I was up with a deadline. I played it, because it was your voice."
I didn't say anything.
"It was four minutes long." His tone was still gentle. "You were crying."
"Clarence."
"You told your stepfather you couldn't do this."
He tilted his head.
"You told him to come and take you, and not to let you wake up first. And you told him who you really wanted."
I could feel my heartbeat in my teeth.
"You heard that," I said, "and you did nothing."
"I did a great deal. I kept it."
He smiled.
"I deleted it from your account so you'd think nobody had it. I thought I might need it. And on Tuesday night I made sure the hotel's night manager was busy on the far side of the building."
