Chapter 18: Pray for Laine
"What did the paper say?" I asked. "Exactly."
My mother shook her head.
"I didn't read it. He had his finger on the line. He had such nice hands."
"Did it name a trustee?"
She thought.
"It said the money would go into a trust for you. Until you were grown." She swallowed. "And it said who would look after it until then."
"Who?"
She didn't answer.
She didn't have to.
Six years Dwight had held my father's money.
Then on my twenty-third birthday it came to me.
Three days later, he started walking into my room.
"Did Dad ever see that paper?"
"Dwight said he'd take it to his office for your father to sign." Her voice broke.
"Your father called him that Friday. I heard him in the garage. He was angry. He never got angry."
"He found it," I said. "In his own file."
Gage was standing at the window with his back to all of us.
He said, without turning around, "We go to the police. Today. All of it."
