Chapter 10: What He Let Them Do

Sean's POV

I am not a man who goes looking for a fight.

I have been in plenty, and I have never once enjoyed the walk to one.

But I drove down to Alder Street that afternoon with my phone recording in my shirt pocket.

My hands were loose on the wheel.

Alexis had asked me for only two things the night before.

Her passport, in the nightstand drawer on her side of that house.

And a tin of her mother's recipe cards.

Terrence had put it on a high shelf where she needed a chair to reach it.

She had not asked me to go.

She had said it to the ceiling, quietly, while she thought I was asleep.

I had not been asleep.

I parked at the curb and sat there for a minute with the engine off.

The house was yellow and neat, with a flag in the planter and a wreath on the door.

A county cruiser sat in the driveway beside the white van.

So he had company.

I got out and went up the walk.

Terrence opened the door before I knocked.

He was in a golf shirt and slippers.

He held a coffee mug with the town council's seal on it.

"Well," he said pleasantly. "The carpenter."

"I'm here for her passport and a tin of recipe cards."

"Are you."

"The order lets her collect her things. I'm collecting them for her."

"The order keeps me away from her."

He stepped back.

"It says nothing about you. Come in, Sean. Please. It's a free country."

He knew my name.

That was the first thing I filed away.

The deputy sat at the kitchen table with a plate of cake.
