Chapter 18: Public Comment
The Marrow Creek town council met on the second floor of the municipal building, under a portrait of a man in a powdered wig.
By seven on Monday, every folding chair was taken.
People stood along the walls.
I knew half the faces from the grocery store and the other half from the booster club picnics where I had stood beside Terrence holding a tray of lemon bars.
The club came in last.
Twelve men in leather walked up the center aisle behind my brother, and the room went silent in a ripple, row by row.
June took my arm.
"Breathe," she said.
"I am."
"Do it where I can hear it."
The council sat at a long table at the front.
Five of them, with name placards.
Terrence sat second from the left in a blue blazer.
His nose was taped, and he had his hands folded in front of him in that patient way that had fooled the town for ten years.
The council president, a heavy woman with reading glasses on a chain, rapped a gavel.
"We'll move to public comment."
Dane stood up.
He walked to the microphone in the center aisle.
He took off his cap and held it in both hands.
"My name is Dane Hourigan," he said, and his voice came out rough. "Most of you know me. I run the Warriors, out on the Ridge. I'm here to say something I should have said five years ago."
"Mr. Hourigan," Terrence said smoothly, "if this is about the note, it's a private matter between the parties."
"You made it public when you called it," Dane said.
He looked at the room.
"Five years ago Councilman Kingswood offered to hold off on a loan my father took out. The price was that I stay away from my own sister. I took the deal. I paid him eighteen hundred dollars in cash on the first Friday of every month. I did it sixty times."
