Chapter 16: Boathouse, Again
He wasn't in the boathouse.
He sat on the end of the school dock with his bag beside him and his boots over the water.
The sky had gone low and grey, and a thin rain was starting to prick the lake.
I walked out along the planks and sat down next to him, close enough that our shoulders touched.
He didn't move away.
"You're not allowed on this dock," he said. "Noon, my father said."
"It's ten past ten. You have two hours of dock."
"Mindy."
"Your phone's in your hand. Did she pick up?"
He turned the screen over.
Three calls to the same number sat on it, each one ending in a ring that nobody answered.
"She doesn't ignore me," he said. "Not ever. She sends a thumbs up when I send a picture of a sandwich."
"Then something's wrong, or your father's wrong."
"Either one is bad."
"Either one is a reason to go and ask her."
