Chapter 20: Comeuppance
"Sit down," the chair said to his wife.
"No," said Rhys's mother. "Not today."
She walked down the bleachers, past her son, onto the gym floor, and across it to the long table.
Two older people in plain dark coats rose from the third row and followed her.
An old man with a cane of his own, and a small woman holding a leather folder against her chest.
"I am a trustee of the Hollis Fund," she said. "So are they."
"My name was Hollis before it was Montgomery. My mother set up the fund, and she wrote the terms."
She took a thick document from the small woman's folder and laid it open on the table in front of the dean.
"Clause nine," she said. "Read it aloud, please."
The dean put on her glasses.
"A recipient's conduct shall be judged by the trustees of this fund, and by no other body," she read. "A scholar may be removed only by a vote of the three trustees."
The dean looked up.
