Chapter 22: Rhys Apologizes
I wore boots, and I was glad of them.
At noon the Commons steps were as full as the day I'd arrived, and the fountain below them was running.
Rhys stood on the lowest step with his hands at his sides.
He had the plain navy blazer on, no tie, and the brass RESERVED plate from the Quad's table held in one fist.
Grayson and Lane stood close behind me, one on each side.
Sean stood a little way off with the crowd, hands in his cardigan pockets.
Rhys's mother stood at the very top of the steps, alone, in her grey coat.
"I said it was mine to give," Rhys said, loud enough for the back rows.
"I want to give it where I took it."
"This plate says RESERVED. The Quad's table is open to anybody from today."
He set the brass plate on the stone lip of the fountain.
Then he sat on the edge, swung his legs over, and stepped down into the water in his good shoes.
