Chapter 18: My Own Wall
The red frame faded out of my eye.
The living room came back.
The football replay, the old man's arm, Ruby snoring softly against it.
"On its own," I whispered.
[On its own,] said the System. [No pushing, no planning, no tricks. If they catch you steering, it's over.]
"I don't steer anymore."
[Host. You steered for a year. They have the logs.]
I sat very still on the Raineys' couch.
Five weeks.
Fifteen points.
And the only rule was that I couldn't do anything about it.
"What do I do, then?"
The System was quiet for a long time.
[Honestly? Live your life. It's the only thing that's ever worked.]
The Monday after Thanksgiving, the old man called me into the garage office.
The office was a desk, a calendar from a tire company and a coffee maker older than me.
He pointed at the back wall of the shop.
Cinderblock, painted a tired cream color, with a water stain shaped like Florida.
"That wall's ugly," he said.
"It's a little ugly."
"I've looked at it for thirty years. I'm done looking at it." He took an envelope out of his desk. "Five hundred now. Five hundred when it's done. Paint whatever you want on it."
