Chapter 6: The Garage
The garage smelled like oil and coffee and old rubber.
There were three motorcycles up on stands, each one in pieces.
Tools hung on a pegboard in neat outlines, every wrench in its painted shape.
A radio was playing a baseball replay very quietly.
An old man in coveralls sat on a stool with a carburetor in his lap.
He looked up at us over his glasses.
"You're early," he said to Jesse.
"Skipped the race."
"Good." The old man looked at me. "And who's this, dripping on my floor?"
"Callie," Jesse said.
The old man's eyebrows went up.
"The Callie?"
I looked at Jesse.
Jesse looked at the ceiling.
"I've heard a lot about the library," the old man said. He went back to his carburetor. "There's towels in the back. Don't use the blue ones, those are for engines."
I used a white one.
When I came back out, Jesse already had his jacket off and his sleeves pushed up.
He was crouched beside a silver bike with the side panel off.
He didn't look like the boy who sat next to me every night in the library staring at the wall.
He looked like someone who knew exactly what he was doing.
His hands moved without hurrying.
He found something, said a word I won't repeat, and fixed it.
"How long have you worked here?" I asked.
"Since I was sixteen."
"You never told me."
"You never..."
"Asked," I said. "I know."
I sat on an upturned crate and watched him.
"When?" I said. "You were with me at the library every night until it closed."
