Chapter 18: The Grey

The hall exploded.

Wolves were on their feet, shouting.

Raife sat very still in the King's chair with his hands folded.

I stood up.

I walked out of the front pew and up to the ring on the flagstones.

I picked it up.

The hall went quiet in waves as people saw me do it.

"He doesn't forfeit anything," I said.

"Not today. The Assembly's on the twentieth. You said so yourself, sir. In front of everyone. So you'll decide it at the Assembly."

Raife looked down at me with real fondness.

"Miss Coldwell. The charter is very clear."

"Then it'll still be clear in nine days."

The old man in tweed called out, "She's right. It's the Assembly's to decide. Not a Saturday council."

Then he smiled and inclined his head.

"The Assembly, then," he said. "Nine days."

He rose and walked out by the side door, and the council followed him.

Caspian turned to me.

I put the ring in his hand and closed his fingers over it.

"Tower," I said. "Now."

We got inside and he shut the oak door and I turned around.
