Chapter 25: Araminta's Choice
Nobody moved.
The redhead had half risen off the couch.
The blond senior had his good hand in a fist.
Caspian's eyes had gone gold, but his hands were open at his sides.
"How did you get up here?" I asked.
"I walked. A hundred and nine steps. I counted, the night I filmed you." Araminta looked at me. "You smell like the lake. And Roswell's scones. The whole kitchen garden smells of them."
Annis went red to the ears.
"Are you going to tell him?" I said.
Araminta didn't answer.
She was looking at the old man in tweed's checkbook.
"You're paying her grandfather's debt," she said to him.
"I am."
"You told my father at the ball that the Wycliffes were the finest blood in the east."
"I did," the old man said. "I was being polite."
Something went across her face.
I picked up my coat.
"Come outside," I said to her. "Just us."
"Sally," Caspian said.
"She's got one bad hand, and I've got two good ones," I said. "I'll be on the landing."
We went down the outside stairs to the arrow slit.
