Chapter 32: Spring at Coldwell
The call came on a Tuesday in June, the last week of spring.
A pack up near the Maine border had a daughter who'd shifted in a car crash in March and never come back.
She was nineteen.
Her family had kept her in a shed for two months, because they didn't know what else to do.
Then they'd heard there was a Warden in Vermont who brought them home.
I drove up in the blue pickup with a crate in the back and a bag of apples on the seat.
The Wolf King came too.
He sat with his knees against my dashboard and read one of my romances out loud the whole way, in all the voices.
The shed was at the end of a long gravel drive.
Her mother came out to meet us with her hands twisted in her apron.
She looked at Caspian and started to bow.
Then she looked at me and didn't know what to do.
"I'm Sally," I said. "I'm the Warden."
"You're the Queen."
"Today I'm the Warden. Can I see her?"
The young wolf was pressed into the back corner of the shed in the dark.
