Chapter 22: The Hearing
The Grange hall held two hundred people, and by ten o'clock every bench was full and the walls were lined with coats.
Osmund sat at the long table on the platform with the stout woman in green on his left and the clerk on his right.
He had put on his best tweed, and his cane lay across his knees.
I sat in the front row with the green ledger under my cardigan, and my eight students sat in a block behind me.
The brothers stood against the wall at either side, because the chair had said the co-heads would be heard last.
"The Council will hear the Handbook's account of this term," Osmund said. "I will begin."
"I'd like the students first," I said.
My voice carried.
Heads turned.
"Miss Pascoe, you are out of order."
"The Handbook says the Council hears those it governs," said the woman in green, not looking at him. "Page forty. Let her."
Patsy stood up.
She had her red hat on, and her hands shook, and she held the Handbook open to a page with a yellow tab.
"Chapter Four," she read. "'An Omega in first heat is not competent to refuse, and must be guided by the pack's elder.'"
She looked up at the hall.
"My first heat came on a Tuesday. A man in a brown suit was brought to my door to be my elder."
"That sentence is why a stranger in a brown suit stood in my doorway. Nobody placed me. A teacher sat on the floor with me and told me the truth, and I walked out of it on my own feet."
She sat down.
One by one the others stood.
A tall boy read the rule on silence, a girl read the one on shame.
And each of them said what it had cost in plain words, a year in a cold bedroom, a sister who never spoke of hers.
