Chapter 9: Rounds
Titus's office was a closet with a desk in it.
He didn't sit. Neither did I.
He turned the tablet around and shoved it across the desk at me.
"Bed six," he said. "The cadet with the shoulder."
The one with the bite wound from sparring. The one whose dressing I'd smelled a week ago.
"At 2:10 this morning somebody doubled his sedative," Titus said. "His pressure dropped through the floor. The night team spent forty minutes getting it back."
"Is he alive?"
"Barely." He tapped the screen. "Look whose name is on the order."
Verbal order. Dose doubled.
Per Dr. Tenley.
My stomach went cold.
"I didn't give that order."
"Your name says you did."
"I was off at seven last night."
"Off where?"
He looked at my hair. At the sweatshirt. At the smell of Nero all over me.
"Off with my brother. While a nineteen-year-old kid nearly died with your name on his chart."
"I didn't give that order, Titus."
"Dr. Varro. On this floor I'm Dr. Varro." He picked up his stethoscope. "Rounds start in ten minutes. You'll explain it to the team."
"I'll do more than explain it."
He was already out the door.
I went to the locker room and pulled on scrubs with shaking hands.
Rounds started at bed six.
The whole surgical team was there. Six interns, two residents, the charge nurse, and Titus at the head of it.
The cadet was gray against the pillow, with oxygen in his nose.
His shoulder was wrapped thick in white gauze.
"Dr. Tenley," Titus said. "Walk us through the overnight event."
Everyone looked at me.
Somebody's mouth twitched. The wolfless wonder, about to get it.
"I'll start with the order," I said. "Charge nurse, who took it?"
The charge nurse looked at her screen. "Night intern. Entered from the station terminal at 2:10."
