Chapter 15: Tea at the Club
"Bring your mother," Garrick read aloud, in the blue light of his phone. "He means mine."
"Do you want me to come?"
"I want you to be asleep in this bed with a clean conscience."
He dressed in the dark and kissed me once, hard, on the forehead.
"I'll tell you everything after," he said. "In daylight, at a table, with your mother in the room if you like."
"Go."
He went down the stairs, and I heard my mother's voice in the kitchen, and then the clink of a mug.
She was handing him coffee.
She had not said a word to him all week.
She gave him a cup, and he took it.
At four that afternoon I walked into the Onwentsia Club on Amos's arm.
The dining room had white linen and tiered trays of sandwiches no one would eat.
Every table held women in cashmere, and every head turned and made a show of turning back.
"I haven't been here since they banned my duck," Amos said, loud enough for the room.
He tapped his cane's silver head.
"It was a different duck. They never believed me."
He steered me to a table by the window and lowered himself into a chair.
