Chapter 19: What I Want
Nine days before the auction, Garrick Whitcombe stood in my mother's kitchen with a dish towel over his shoulder and asked me a question.
It was a quarter to ten.
The staff had gone to the carriage house, and my mother was upstairs with a mystery novel.
Amos was asleep in the rocking chair with his phone still held up.
"Sol."
"Hmm."
"What do you want?"
I looked up from the flour tin I was refilling.
"For what?"
"For anything," he said. "Not what's right. Not what the town would allow. Not what I could give you, because I'm out of those."
He wiped his hands very slowly.
"I've been telling you things for three weeks. What I'd fix, what I'd do, what I'd stop doing."
He took the towel off his shoulder.
"I've never asked. Tell me what you want, and I'll listen to the whole answer."
I set the tin down.
The kitchen lights were on, all of them, the overhead and the lamp and the bulb over the stove.
I had stopped hiding from lamps three weeks ago.
