Chapter 23: The Spare Room
Rosalind looked at my bare legs and her son's open collar, and she did not say a word about either.
"Blythe changed the locks at six," she said. "Her father's lawyer says I may not stay in a house I no longer own."
Her voice was perfectly level, and it shook underneath.
"The hotel declined my card. I telephoned a dozen people."
"A dozen," I said.
"Nobody answered."
She held the suitcase handle in both hands.
"I came to see Kersti," she said.
"She's in Waukegan."
"Then I'll wait."
I stood in the doorway in Garrick's shirt and thought about every service door in that house.
"It's my mother's door," I said. "She decides. You can wait in the kitchen until she's home."
Rosalind blinked.
She had expected to be refused, and she had come anyway, and she did not know what to do with a chair.
I put the kettle on.
She sat at the table with her suitcase at her feet.
Garrick stood at the sink with his back to her and his hands on the edge.
For half an hour nobody spoke, except the kettle.
At a quarter to eleven, headlights swung across the window.
The driver's car came up the drive with the whole staff packed into it, singing, and it died in the middle of a hymn.
